Arrive at Heathrow

Target three hours before departure for an international flight. Check in, drop bags and eat before boarding. Keep medication, chargers and one change of clothes in cabin baggage.

14:45

Etihad to Bangkok via Abu Dhabi

Try to sleep during the second half and switch mentally to Bangkok time.

Sun30Aug

Bangkok arrival and Chatuchak

Easy start, shopping, food and massage

12:10

Land at BKK

Best-value route: Airport Rail Link to Phaya Thai, BTS to Nana, then walk or take a very short Bolt.

🚕 Easiest: official airport taxi · 40–70 mins · ฿400–฿650 total · £9–£14.60

Entry: free

Browsing/snacks budget: ฿600–฿1,500 · £13.50–£33.70

19:30

Local dinner and massage

Try pad kra pao, grilled pork or chicken pad thai. Say mai phet for not spicy.

Dinner for two: ฿300–฿600 · £6.70–£13.50
One-hour massage each: ฿600–฿1,000 total · £13.50–£22.50
Likely day-one spend for two: ฿1,500–฿3,100 · £34–£70, excluding shopping splurges.

Rain

Indoor alternative

Terminal 21, the food court, coffee and a massage.

Mon31Aug

Essential temples and Chinatown

Culture, ferries and a proper food crawl

07:30

Grand Palace

Arrive near opening time. Carry lightweight trousers because some temple staff may be stricter than expected about long shorts.

Hotel → Grand Palace: taxi 35–60 mins, ฿220–฿400 · £4.90–£9; rail plus ferry 50–65 mins, about ฿120–฿220 for two · £2.70–£4.90.
Entry: ฿500 each · ฿1,000 for two · £22.50

10:30

Wat Pho

See the Reclining Buddha, then stop for coffee or an early lunch.

Grand Palace → Wat Pho: walk about 10–15 mins · free.
Allow for entry: roughly ฿300 each · ฿600 for two · £13.50
Coffee/lunch for two: ฿350–฿650 · £7.90–£14.60

12:30

Public ferry to Wat Arun

Cheap, scenic and far better value than buying a private river cruise.

Cross-river ferry: about 5–10 mins · roughly ฿10–฿20 for two · under 50p.
Wat Arun entry: budget about ฿200 each · ฿400 for two · £9

15:30

Hotel break and massage

Return before the evening so you are not templed-out and exhausted.

18:30

Chinatown food crawl

Share small plates and keep moving. Look for pork satay, crispy pork, dumplings, banana roti, mango sticky rice and Thai milk tea.

Hotel ↔ Chinatown: MRT/BTS about 30–40 mins each way · roughly ฿160–฿280 return for two · £3.60–£6.30.
Food crawl for two: ฿700–฿1,300 · £15.70–£29.20
Expected spend for two: ฿3,000–฿4,300 · £67–£97, including all three temple entries, food, transport and a massage.

Do not commit to one giant meal. Chinatown is better as a progressive dinner.
Tue1Sep

Canal boat, shopping, rooftop and Jodd Fairs

Modern Bangkok with a cheap local twist

09:30

Saen Saep canal boat

Use it as real transport through Bangkok rather than paying for a tourist cruise.

Boat for two: around ฿30–฿60 · 70p–£1.35

10:30

Pratunam and Platinum Fashion Mall

Good for affordable clothes, then continue to Siam for coffee and air conditioning.

Coffee and lunch for two: ฿500–฿900 · £11.20–£20.20
Shopping: personal, but ฿1,000 = about £22.50.

16:45

Affordable rooftop sunset

Pick somewhere with no minimum spend, order one drink and enjoy the skyline without pretending a £25 cocktail is character-building.

Two drinks: roughly ฿700–฿1,300 · £15.70–£29.20, depending on venue and service charge.

18:30

Jodd Fairs Ratchada

Take MRT to Thailand Cultural Centre and look around before choosing what to eat.

Hotel → Jodd Fairs: BTS/MRT 25–40 mins · around ฿80–฿140 for two · £1.80–£3.15.
Dinner/snacks for two: ฿600–฿1,200 · £13.50–£27
Expected spend for two: ฿2,000–฿4,000 · £45–£90, before clothes shopping.

Rain

Indoor alternative

Platinum, CentralWorld and Terminal 21. Move Jodd Fairs later if the weather clears.

Wed2Sep

Morning Bangkok hit, then Chiang Mai

Thai VietJet · 13:50 to 15:15

07:45

Breakfast and Benjakitti Park

Use the morning rather than writing it off. Have coffee near the hotel, walk through Benjakitti Park and the forest park skywalk, then return for bags. It is close enough to stay low-risk.

Park: free
Breakfast/iced coffees for two: ฿350–฿650 · £7.90–£14.60

09:45

Back to hotel, shower and checkout

Be fully packed the night before. Aim to leave by 10:35.

10:35

Travel to the airport

Recommended: taxi or Bolt direct to Suvarnabhumi BKK.

Hotel → BKK: 35–70 mins · ฿350–฿600 including likely tolls · £7.90–£13.50. Rail is cheaper but awkward with bags.

11:50

Be at the airport

Target two hours before a domestic flight with checked baggage. Check in online beforehand but do not rely on that to cut the timing too tightly.

16:00

Airport to Lanna Oriental Hotel

CNX is very close to the Old City.

CNX → hotel: Grab or airport taxi · 15–25 mins · ฿150–฿250 · £3.40–£5.60.

18:30

North Gate food stalls

Try grilled chicken, sai ua sausage, pork leg rice and mango sticky rice.

Your big food day

Coffee crawl and hotel break

One specialist coffee stop and one aesthetic café is plenty.

Two iced drinks: ฿180–฿320 · £4–£7.20

16:00

Evening cooking class with market visit

Choose a class with pickup, a local market stop and several dishes. Confirm seafood substitutions and reduced chilli.

Expected spend for two: ฿2,700–฿4,300 · £61–£97.

Fri4Sep

Ethical elephant observation day

Rescued elephants, no riding or bathing

08:00

Observation-led sanctuary visit

Book a programme focused on rescued elephants behaving naturally. Elephant Nature Park is the closest match to what you described and also cares for other rescued animals.

Ethical full-day programme: plan around ฿2,500–฿3,500 each · ฿5,000–฿7,000 for two · £112–£157. Confirm lunch and hotel transfers are included.

Check the exact programme wording because interaction levels can differ.
17:30

Return, shower and massage

Keep the evening relaxed after a full outdoor day.

Massage for two: ฿600–฿1,000 · £13.50–£22.50

19:30

Night Bazaar or relaxed live music

Share northern Thai dishes rather than booking a formal restaurant.

Dinner/drinks for two: ฿600–฿1,100 · £13.50–£24.70
Expected spend for two: ฿6,200–฿9,100 · £139–£204. This is one of the trip's intentional splurge days.

Sat5Sep

Doi Suthep, Nimman and Saturday market

Viewpoint, cafés and your best market night

08:00

Doi Suthep

Go early for cooler weather and clearer views. There are steps but no serious hike.

Private return car: around ฿700–฿1,200 · £15.70–£27; shared songthaew can be much cheaper.
Entry/donations for two: budget ฿100–฿200 · £2.25–£4.50

Dinner/snacks for two: ฿500–฿1,000 · £11.20–£22.50

Sun6Sep

Local morning, then Koh Samui

Bangkok Airways · 14:35 to 18:30

07:45

Warorot Market and riverside breakfast

A worthwhile final Chiang Mai hit that is close to town. Browse local food, dried fruit and snacks, then have coffee near the Ping River. Your Lanna breakfast is included, so this is an optional snack/coffee outing rather than a second full breakfast.

Return taxi: roughly ฿150–฿300 · £3.40–£6.70.
Coffee/snacks for two: ฿200–฿400 · £4.50–£9

10:15

Return, shower and check out

Keep the final hour calm and be ready to leave by 12:00.

12:00

Hotel to Chiang Mai Airport

Grab or airport taxi.

Hotel → CNX: 15–25 mins · ฿150–฿250 · £3.40–£5.60.

12:35

Be at CNX

This plan gives you about two hours, which is comfortable with bags. Your Booking.com itinerary appears to have been bought as one journey, but confirm that both sectors share one Bangkok Airways booking reference and that bags are tagged through to USM. If the confirmation shows separate ticket numbers or separate booking references, send it over for checking.

18:30

Land at Koh Samui

Allow around 20 to 35 minutes for bags and getting out of the small airport.

19:00

Airport to OUTRIGGER Koh Samui

Easiest: pre-booked transfer or official taxi · 25–45 mins · ฿600–฿900 per car · £13.50–£20.20.
Cheaper: shared minivan · ฿400–฿700 for two · £9–£15.70, but slower.

20:00

Check in, eat and unpack

13:00

Cheap local lunch

Order pad see ew, fried rice, grilled chicken or massaman curry.

17:00

Fisherman's Village

Browse shops, eat street food and stay for the evening atmosphere.

Dinner/snacks for two: ฿800–฿1,500 · £18–£33.70
Expected spend for two: ฿2,400–฿4,300 · £54–£97.

Tue8Sep

Pig Island half-day

Your Koh Samui must-do

Compare what is included: transfers, island fee, drinks and lunch.
14:00

Pool, nap and massage. No second major activity.

Massage for two: ฿800–฿1,600 · £18–£36, depending on local shop versus resort spa.

19:00

Casual Lamai dinner

Choose somewhere busy with locals rather than a polished beachfront tourist menu.

Dinner for two: ฿600–฿1,100 · £13.50–£24.70

Wed9Sep

Self-drive island loop

Temples, waterfall and flexible viewpoints

08:30

Collect a small hire car

Bring licences and an International Driving Permit. Photograph every panel, wheel and the fuel level.

Small automatic car: ฿900–฿1,500 · £20–£34
Fuel: ฿250–฿450 · £5.60–£10.10
Insurance upgrade: allow ฿300–฿700 · £6.70–£15.70

11:30

Na Muang Waterfall

Visit the accessible lower waterfall and wear shoes with grip.

Parking/entry allowance: ฿100–฿300 · £2.25–£6.70

14:00

Hin Ta and Hin Yai, then Lamai viewpoint

The rocks are a quick and slightly silly stop, not a major attraction.

Parking/viewpoint allowance: ฿100–฿400 · £2.25–£9
Lunch and drinks for two: ฿700–฿1,200 · £15.70–£27
Expected daytime spend for two: ฿2,450–฿4,750 · £55–£107, plus dinner.

Rain

Move the driving day

Do not force unfamiliar roads in heavy rain. Swap this day with Thursday.

Thu10Sep

Final full island day

Resort, optional nature and sunset dinner

Morning

Pool and beach

Skip Ang Thong. Another full boat day would take too much of your five-star resort time. Breakfast is included.

Breakfast: £0 included
Lunch for two: ฿500–฿1,000 · £11.20–£22.50

14:00

Choose your afternoon

Driver/nature option: around ฿1,500–฿2,500 · £34–£56
Shopping option: transport about ฿800–฿1,400 return · £18–£31.50, before shopping.

18:00

Sunset and final Samui dinner

Choose a relaxed beach restaurant with good Thai food, not a formal romantic package.

Dinner for two: ฿900–฿1,800 · £20–£40.50
Expected spend for two: around ฿2,400–฿5,300 · £54–£119, depending on afternoon choice.

Fri11Sep

Back to Bangkok and final city day

07:50 flight · cheap day room · airport late

05:15

Leave OUTRIGGER for Samui Airport

Pre-book the transfer the night before. Aim to reach USM by 06:15, around 1 hour 35 minutes before the 07:50 domestic flight.

OUTRIGGER → USM: 30–45 mins · ฿600–฿900 · £13.50–£20.20.
Breakfast: likely missed because of the early departure. Ask the hotel in advance about a takeaway breakfast box.

10:15

BKK to your Bangkok day-room hotel

Book near Airport Rail Link or a BTS/MRT interchange; a full cheap night can be easier than a formal day-use rate.

Best value: Airport Rail Link plus local rail/taxi · ฿160–฿360 for two · £3.60–£8.10.
Easiest: airport taxi · ฿400–฿650 · £9–£14.60.
Cheap room allowance: ฿900–฿1,800 · £20–£40.50

12:00

Final shopping and favourites

Terminal 21, MBK or a return to Chinatown, depending on what you missed.

Lunch, coffees and city transport for two: ฿700–฿1,400 · £15.70–£31.50, before shopping.

18:00

Final Thai dinner and massage

Collect luggage around 22:30 and head to BKK.

Dinner and massage for two: ฿1,200–฿2,200 · £27–£49

22:45

Leave central Bangkok for BKK

At this time, a taxi or Bolt is simplest.

Central Bangkok → BKK: 35–60 mins · ฿350–฿600 including likely tolls · £7.90–£13.50.
Expected final-day spend for two: ฿3,750–฿6,600 · £84–£148, excluding shopping.

Transport planner

Time and cost for two

✈️ Your airport targets

  • LHR, 29 Aug: arrive 11:45 for the 14:45 international flight.
  • Bangkok domestic, 2 Sep: arrive 11:50 for the 13:50 flight; leave Sukhumvit about 10:35.
  • CNX, 6 Sep: arrive 12:35 for the 14:35 flight; leave the hotel around 12:00.
  • USM, 11 Sep: arrive about 06:15 for the 07:50 flight; leave OUTRIGGER around 05:15.
  • BKK, 12 Sep: arrive 00:15 for the 03:15 international flight; leave central Bangkok around 22:45.

🌆 Bangkok typical journeys

  • BKK → Sukhumvit hotel: rail and BTS, about 60 to 85 minutes, roughly ฿160 to ฿360 for two; taxi, about 40 to 70 minutes, roughly ฿400 to ฿650 per car.
  • Hotel → Grand Palace: BTS/MRT plus ferry or short taxi, about 40 to 60 minutes, roughly ฿100 to ฿250 for two. Direct taxi can be ฿180 to ฿350 before traffic delays.
  • Hotel → Chatuchak: BTS from Nana to Mo Chit, roughly 35 minutes and around ฿100 to ฿140 for two.
  • Hotel → Chinatown: BTS/MRT combination, about 30 to 40 minutes and roughly ฿80 to ฿140 for two.
  • Hotel → Jodd Fairs Ratchada: BTS/MRT to Thailand Cultural Centre, about 25 to 40 minutes and around ฿80 to ฿140 for two.

🏯 Chiang Mai typical journeys

  • CNX ↔ hotel: 15 to 25 minutes, roughly ฿150 to ฿250 per car.
  • Old City trips: often walkable; Grab/Bolt commonly around ฿70 to ฿150 per car for short rides.
  • Doi Suthep return: shared red songthaew can be the bargain option; a private car/driver is easier and may be roughly ฿700 to ฿1,200 depending on waiting time and stops.
  • Elephant sanctuary: prioritise a booking with hotel transfers included because many are well outside the city.

🏝 Koh Samui typical journeys

  • USM ↔ OUTRIGGER: 25 to 45 minutes, roughly ฿600 to ฿900 per private car.
  • OUTRIGGER → Fisherman's Village: around 30 to 45 minutes, often roughly ฿500 to ฿800 each way by taxi or app car.
  • OUTRIGGER → Lamai: about 10 to 20 minutes, commonly roughly ฿200 to ฿400 each way.
  • One-day small car: budget roughly ฿900 to ฿1,500 plus fuel and insurance extras. Use a reputable company and photograph the vehicle.
  • Pig Island: choose a tour with hotel transfer included; it avoids paying separately to reach Thong Krut pier.
Ride-hailing and taxi prices are planning ranges, not fixed quotes. Rain, traffic, demand and hotel location can move them substantially. Check Grab and Bolt side-by-side before each ride.

Practical guide

Quick-reference cards

💳 Cards and ATMs

Use Chase or Monzo for most card spending and always choose Thai baht, never pounds, when asked. Avoid the ATM's conversion rate.

Make fewer, larger withdrawals because Thai ATM operators normally charge a flat local fee. Halifax Clarity is best kept for purchases rather than cash withdrawals, because cash interest can start immediately.

📱 eSIM

Buy before departure, activate when ready to use it and keep your UK SIM active only for texts. Disable UK data roaming.

🚆 Transport

  • Bangkok: BTS, MRT and Airport Rail Link first. Bolt or Grab for awkward final legs.
  • Chiang Mai: Bolt, Grab and red songthaews.
  • Koh Samui: compare ride-hailing apps, but keep a taxi fallback. Hire a car for one island-loop day.

🛕 Temple clothing

Cover shoulders and knees. Keep lightweight trousers in your day bag even if your shorts are long. Remove shoes where required and avoid pointing your feet at Buddha images.

🍜 Food phrases

Mai phet means not spicy. Phet nit noi means a little spicy. Ask for chilli and sauces separately.

🌧 Rain strategy

Expect bursts of heavy rain rather than assuming every day is ruined. Keep the car day, Pig Island and outdoor viewpoints movable.

⚠️ Tourist traps

  • “The Grand Palace is closed.” Check the gate yourself.
  • Tuk-tuk rides involving gem or tailor shops.
  • Unmetered taxis without an agreed price.
  • Card or ATM conversion into pounds.
  • Elephant venues involving riding, tricks or forced bathing.
